“Macho Man” Randy Savage
Oooh yeah!
Few performers have ever captured the imagination of wrestling fans quite like “Macho Man” Randy Savage. With his unmistakable voice, larger-than-life charisma, dazzling ring attire, and unmatched intensity, Savage became one of the greatest superstars in the history of professional wrestling.
In 2026, the MJN Center proudly honored that legacy by posthumously inducting Randy Savage into the MJN Center Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame during a star-studded ceremony at Awesome Championship Wrestling RECKONING presented by Busted Open Radio’s Dave LaGreca and Internet Personality Machoverse alongside stars Tony Atlas, Mario Mancini, Paul Roma and members of the Poffo Estate, recognizing not only his worldwide impact on sports entertainment, but also the unforgettable moments he created inside the very building now known as the MJN Center.
Macho Madness came alive once more as we honored the incomparable legacy of Randy Poffo — forever known as “Macho Man” Randy Savage whose connection to this building runs deep. It was in Poughkeepsie where Savage made his legendary WWE debut, introducing the world to Miss Elizabeth. From that night on, his intensity, charisma, and presence made him an absolute icon.
First announced at Aftershock by Machoverse and “Black Machismo” Jay Lethal, this induction celebrates the lasting impact he left on these walls. A heartfelt thank you to Lynn Poffo and Jason of the extended Poffo family for the moving tribute speech.
“Macho Man” Randy Savage
Long before sold-out stadiums and WrestleMania main events defined his career, the then Mid-Hudson Civic Center served as one of the WWF’s premier television taping locations throughout the 1980s. It was here in Poughkeepsie that fans watched Savage’s meteoric rise unfold week after week.
The Rise of the WWF Intercontinental Champion
After joining the World Wrestling Federation in 1985, Randy Savage quickly established himself as one of the company’s brightest young stars. Accompanied by the elegant Miss Elizabeth, Savage’s combination of athleticism, arrogance, and explosive offense made him impossible to ignore.
The Mid-Hudson Civic Center became a regular stop during his rise. Throughout 1986, Savage defended the WWF Intercontinental Championship in front of passionate Hudson Valley crowds during numerous television tapings, delivering lightning-fast victories with his signature Flying Elbow Drop while reminding the wrestling world why he called himself “The Cream of the Crop.”
A Legendary Rivalry Begins
Some of Savage’s most memorable appearances in Poughkeepsie weren’t simply about championship victories—they helped build one of wrestling’s most beloved storylines.
Fans inside the Mid-Hudson Civic Center witnessed the growing obsession of George “The Animal” Steele with Miss Elizabeth. Steele frequently presented Elizabeth with flowers before Savage matches, only to watch the jealous Intercontinental Champion violently destroy them. The emotional confrontations between Savage, Elizabeth, and Steele became recurring highlights of WWF television and laid the foundation for one of the era’s defining rivalries.
Television History Made in Poughkeepsie
Throughout the mid-1980s, the Mid-Hudson Civic Center was one of the WWF’s primary television production homes, with episodes of WWF Championship Wrestling, All American Wrestling, and other syndicated programs taped inside the arena.
Because of that, countless Randy Savage moments that aired across North America actually originated in Poughkeepsie. Hudson Valley fans weren’t simply watching history—they were part of it. The crowd reactions, championship defenses, interviews, and unforgettable character moments filmed inside the Civic Center introduced millions of viewers to the superstar who would soon become one of professional wrestling’s biggest attractions.
